A retro comic book style illustration of a slightly overweight, middle-aged man with a goatee and flannel shirt. He is standing at a dusty rural road junction next to his parked sedan, looking lost. He is scratching his head in confusion, holding a large, unfolding paper roadmap. A thought bubble above him asks, "Okay, the map says go left at the old barn... but which way is 'left' from here?" Two faded signs ambiguously point left and right.

Making Adjustments

Journal Entry: Staying in Motion

Man with a map points to a road sign. Speech bubble: Ah, I see it now! Left at the old barn... perfect! When you live with multiple health conditions like I do, you quickly learn that life is all about making adjustments. It’s Friday, and looking back at this past week, I’ve managed to stay active with swimming and cardiac rehab. I’m also trying to eat better, which seems to be working so far—I’ve even lost a couple of pounds! However, I’ve been dealing with some lumbar spine pain, so I’ll be checking in with my doctor about that on Monday.

I have another appointment on Wednesday, too. Since I’m taking the week to focus on these medical visits, I’ll be back at cardiac rehab on Friday the 19th. I initially thought about swimming on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but then I remembered my appointments—haha, I guess I just talked myself out of that plan!

I’m finding that managing all of this is a bit like using a compass. Things won’t always meet my expectations; my weight might not drop as quickly as I’d like, or my body might feel great one day and difficult the next. That’s where my new mantra comes in: Just keep moving. The pool is my biggest help, and I’m so grateful for our local Rec Center. It’s got everything—a decent blood pressure machine, a great gym, and a pool where they even let you borrow water weights.

The mental health side of this journey is its own challenge. Some mornings you wake up with a plan, and then life happens. I’m trying my best to just let the wind blow. I like to think of myself as a sailboat on the sea—I just catch the breeze and head in whatever direction it takes me. As long as the wind is blowing, I’m moving forward, and that’s a good thing.

It’s hot where I live right now—into the 90s!—so swimming is going to be a huge relief. This entry turned out to be more of an exercise log than a food blog, but I’m definitely sticking to my low-sodium cardiac diet and keeping my portions moderate.

Sending peace to you all. Have an awesome day!

Since my blog is focused on cardiac health and eating for heart wellness, weight loss is likely a side effect unless you’re already fit. Then, of course, there’s the diabetes question. Most people who enter cardiac rehabilitation or decide to exercise in their later years do so because their bodies are older and things can…
